Lessons not learned

It is tempting to say that Nietzsche’s ideas came crashing down when the Red Army rolled into Berlin in April 1945 and his most infamous admirer committed suicide in a bunker. Marx’s ambitions, many believe, were left in a heap of rubble when the Berlin Wall came down forty-four years later. Likewise, Mill’s confidence in an emergent religion of humanity seems tragically naïve given the oceans of blood shed throughout the twentieth century.

But can we really say that the West is now free of Promethean temptations? Has scientism disappeared? Can we say that quasi-religious ideologies no longer haunt the imagination of Western societies?

The answer, I fear, is a resounding no. They may have changed their form, but pathologies of reason and faith have continued their proliferation in the West through the twentieth century until today. Bad ideas have a way of persisting.
